For
the last couple of months, Michael Pugh has worked,
created and produced his ceramic collection at Jenggala
Keramik, Bali. With much inspiration from the exotic
and tropical scenes of the island of Bali, he creates
unique images and colors depicted in his work.
He uses the images of faunas, which commonly live
in Bali and frequently associated by certain local
myths such as turtles, geckos and dragonflies. Bali
is also known for its distinctive collection of plants
and flowers, which appeal to Michael.

Flowers such as the lotus, frangipani
and hibiscus are often chosen by Michael to express
his passion on ‘living creatures’. Living
creatures are very important in Bali. Besides human
being, floras and faunas are considered as an eminent
aspect of life. They are involved on most of the
cultural and spiritual activities as well as cared
for and respected in the Balinese culture.
One of the exceptional elements
of his artwork is his recipe of blending the colors.
An alkaline blue color dominates his pottery collection
ranging from plates, vases, bowls to beautifully
painted panels {which resemble a framed painting}.The
unique alkaline blue color is inspired by an Egyptian
and Mediterranean blue that is often applied to
decorative traditional tiles in many Middle Eastern
countries. However, this domination of blue represents
also the ocean and the sky of Bali. Another aspect
that Michael adds to his artwork that contributes
to his “reflections on Bali”.

Michael once said, “ My work is a record of
my story, a celebration of life on this planet here
and now. Without too much thoughts of its future
life, I like to think of my works being used daily
and cherish by the owner”. Based on his statement,
it is clear that not only is he creating a functional
and aesthetical ceramic work, but presents it also
as a narrative medium.
Jenggala Keramik Gallery is proud
to present Michael Pugh’s exhibition entitled
“ Reflections On Bali” and we welcome
him to the island of Bali as another expatriate
artist who is inspired and awed by this beautiful
island.
